Based on Evectors’ social media platform, Pages, this web application is the ideal tool to organise and present aggregated content.

Typical deployment scenarios are:

• Enterprise portals
• Marketing information sites
• Media companies

Any page on the web can be aggregated with one click.

Usually when we implement them, we add to these pages a “cloud” of related tags. The relationship between tags is calculated using a very simple algorithm which counts how many times tags appear in the same context. It is something we have been doing since the old days of K-Collector and which in all its simplicity seem to work very well.

What makes these tag pages much more interesting in version 2.3 of Pages is the fact that tags can now be automatically extracted using Open Calais. Suddenly tag pages and related tag clouds are much more interesting.

For example, check out this page about David Cameron on our demo site (which is mostly aggregating British news feeds), see how most tags in the tag clouds on the left are related? Try moving from tag to tag, and you should be able to notice interesting relationships and news.

On this other “Bollywood” sample site, Open Calais is very efficient finding names of actors and movies. We are then using the Freebase API to automatically retrieve a profile about every actor and the filmography (scroll to the bottom of the tag page for the filmography).

The same interface to Freebase is used to provide some additional info for this trial site designed to aggregate content in the pharma market.

It’s interesting how changing the base of aggregated feeds you can get different results. To make some tests, we have asked to Dave Winer if we could build a site based on his OPML reading list. This is the resulting home page, and these are some interesting tag pages.

Pages

• A new subsystem allows batch entity export as CSV file via forked process, includes email notification
• The feed management UI has been visually improved and extended to support OpenCalais integration
• The Channel Status panel supports multiple section publishing at once (also in the form of a “Publish all” button)
• The Signals browser in the Site Manager has been improved, now the view is sorted by publication date and the tool allows for log export
• The Rules editor in the Aggregator Reader has been greatly improved, now supports feed categories and state-of-the-art tag editing
• PermissionScripts are now editable through the Site Manager
• Templates, CSS files and ActivityScripts have been made independent from the Pages database, this makes them fully manageable through the filesystem
• The next-gen ActivityScript API has been refined and it’s ready for prime time now
• The activity function setEntryTags now supports tag deletion via !tag syntax
• The Editor tools don’t alter the page layout anymore
• The primitive ECI and AdTag Editor plugins have been removed
• The Editor now ships with the Entity plugin (must be explicitly enabled in all installations)
• The list of available Editor plugins has been moved from the database to the app.conf file
• The PageInclude Macro and Editor plugins have been added to the core
• Several improvements have been ported to core MacroFeed from client projects
• MacroToc now also supports passing the ‘position’ parameter as integer. This makes path dynamic based on the position of the current page in the sections tree. The section slug has been removed from the output.
• Customrender now accepts POST calls to allow for longer payloads

Aggregator

• OpenCalais integration has been added to the crawler, allows for semantic analysis and tagging of posts via the free OpenCalais service

ERM

• Django’s admin interface has been removed
• Lucene search now supports pure negative queries on any field

Images

• Added a check to prevent users from uploading images with reserved names (e.g. 404.png)

Messages

• Batch status change of multiple messages
• A sender name to appear in the recipient email client can now be passed to the sendMessage API

With this new feature, any RSS or Atom feed aggregated in the system can be automatically analyzed by Open Calais, the results from the semantic analysis tool are saved as tags in specific schemas, offering full flexibility to content managers and content curators. The configuration for semantic analysis can be applied both at single feed level or at feed category level.

Open Calais can be used both to identify topics for a specific piece of content, or to find specific entity types from a vast list of schemas offered by the analysis tool.

This new version includes many major new features, in particular in the content management area, including:

• New “drag and drop” table of content management tool
• Extended rich text editors in the front-end WYSIWYG tools
• Advanced image management option
• Photo/image library
• New easily customizable “Feed editors” for content authors
• New set of API for quick activity script development

There are also hundreds of performance improvements and bug fixes, making the platform even more robust and scalable, yet reducing the overall footprint for small installations.

The aggregator is another core component of Pages architecture, providing storage content that can either be produced locally (by Pages own editing tools), or aggregated from remote sources.

Full support of all the major syndication and tagging standards makes the aggregator the ideal solution to integrate with existing legacy CMS and also to pull data from blogs and social networking sites such as Twitter or Flickr.

Pages’ built-in editor allows easy manipulation of content of a page in a WYSIWYG environment. Adding a stream of news from the aggregator, a photo, some text, or a query to the semantic database to get, for example, a list of users who are fan of a product is as easy as clicking a button.

ERM is the core semantic database of Pages. It provides a simple yet powerful entity-relationship based storage system where all non-news information of a site can be stored.
